» World Heritage site

This stretch of coastline was nominated as a World Heritage Site because it is "an outstanding example representing a major stage of earths history and the record of life".

The cliffs that make the scenery of Dorsets Jurassic coastline so beautiful and diverse provide an almost continuous sequence of Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous rock formations which span some 185 million years, known as the Mesozoic Era. It is of such international significance due to the diverse range of fossils - marine and terrestrial, vertebrates and invertebrates - which have produced so much evidence of life during Mesozoic times, showing the evolution of species from fish to dinosaurs to mammals.
